Kampot is a city in southern Cambodia, with the Preaek Tuek Chhu River running through the heart of it. It is three miles away from the Gulf of Thailand. Unlike other cities in Cambodia, Kampot has a lot of French colonial buildings. The Damrei Mountains (Elephant Mountains) are east of Kampot and make for a beautiful backdrop. There are a variety of outdoor activities and places to visit in and around the city. Here are five things that you can't miss out on.

5. Explore the local waterfalls

The scenery around Kampot is stunning and perfect for travellers looking for adventure. Tada Roung Chan Waterfall is a 30-minute drive (16km) from the centre of Kampot. Surrounded by nature, the waterfall is a great place to cool off and enjoy some swimming. The 10-minute walk up the steps from the car park is worth it for the views of the valley. Nearby the car park, there are natural pools, picnic areas with hammocks and local food to try. Popokvil Waterfall in Preah Monivong Bokor National Park is another beautiful place to explore. It has a two-tiered fall with a shallow pool in between. Veal Pouch Waterfall (a 15-minute drive from Kampot) is smaller but not busy as the other waterfalls. It is a beautiful place to chill out and relax.

4. Go on a dinner date down the Kampot River

The Preaek Tuek Chhu River is a great location to watch the sunset. There is no shortage of spots to choose from along the riverfront. However, a cruise on the river is the perfect way to spend the evening with your partner. With dozens of cruise boats offering different deals, you find the right one. Some boats stay docked and serve as a restaurant or bar, but most travel down the river. The majority of the cruises last for two hours from start to finish. On these cruise boats, you can expect a variety of local food and drinks. I recommend choosing a fish dish. Khmer music and the sounds of the river make for a relaxing atmosphere. Most people sit on the rooftops of the boats to take in the views. Even though Cambodia is a tropical country, the evenings can turn cool. A light jumper will do the trick in keeping you comfy.

3. Drive up to Bokor Mountain

Driving up to Bokor Mountain through the Preah Monivong Bokor National Park on a motorbike is a ride full of twists and turns, and beautiful scenery. The road has a good surface which makes for an easy ride. Along the way, you will see a few small waterfalls and monkey's on the side of the road. The journey from the centre of Kampot to the top of the mountain (Wat Sampov Pram) is an hour's drive (37km). The 360-degree views of Kampot Province and the coastline are stunning. The landscape is full of luscious green forests and wildlife. It is colder up the top (even when the sun is out) so pack warm clothes. You will only find a few stalls which sell food and drink. Also, don't forget to stop off and take a photo of the Buddha statue (Lok Yeay Mao" Monument) halfway through your journey.

2. Visit La Plantation (Pepper Farm)

La Plantation (Pepper Farm) is a unique opportunity to discover how the famous Kampot Pepper, local spices, fruits and plants are grown and processed. FREE tours of the farm are available throughout the day. You will learn about organic farming methods and have the opportunity to try some samples. A Khmer cooking class is another activity on offer. You will learn about traditional Khmer dishes. Their restaurant overlooks the farm with a beautiful backdrop of the Kampot mountains. The menu offers you a variety of spices for a tasting of the Khmer specialities. Also, a shop is next to the restaurant, where you can buy their high-quality products. Give yourself enough time as the farm is a 30km drive from the centre of Kampot.

1. Have fun at Kampot River Park

The Kampot River Park is the ultimate place for a day of fun on the water. Located in Bat Kbal Damrei Village, the park has a variety of outdoor activities to get your blood pumping. A zipline, water assault course, kayaking, paddle board and slides are some of the activities you can enjoy. Renting a jet ski and riding along the Preaek Tuek Chhu River is a unique experience. If you're looking for a chilled day, check out the picnic areas with hammocks. A member of staff will offer you a food and drinks menu. You will find Western food as well as Khmer food. The River Park is a great location to relax with a beer and watch the sunset behind the Kampot mountains. With only a 20-minute drive back to the centre of Kampot, you can't go wrong.
